Getting started

How your files are handled

Most tools run entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly. Your file is read from disk into the page, processed on your own machine, and handed back as a download — it is never uploaded, and we never see it. Look for the “on your device” badge on a tool.

A few tools can't work that way. High-fidelity Office conversions (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) need a real office engine, so those files stream to our conversion server, get converted in memory, and are deleted immediately — nothing is stored or logged. Those tools are marked “Server convert”.

The basic workflow

  1. Pick a tool from the home page.
  2. Drop your file onto the upload area, or click to browse.
  3. Adjust the options — sensible defaults are pre-filled.
  4. Run it. Long jobs show real progress, never an endless spinner.
  5. Download the result. Several files arrive as a single .zip.

Free vs Pro

The free tier includes every on-device tool — merge, split, compress, rotate, watermark, protect and image conversion — with no ads. Free output carries a small “Made with The Accounting Tools” mark, which Pro removes. OCR needs a free account (30 pages a month).

Pro adds Office ↔ PDF conversion, batch processing, and the accountant toolkit (bank statement → CSV, tables → Excel, Bates numbering, combine + index). Business adds seats for teams. See plans

Tips & limits

  • Very large or image-heavy PDFs use a lot of memory. If a tab struggles, close others, or split the file first.
  • Scanned documents have no text layer. Run OCR PDF before using PDF to Text, Tables to Excel, or Bank Statement to CSV.
  • Passwords are applied on your device and cannot be recovered by us — keep the original if you might forget it.
  • Always spot-check extracted financial data before importing it into your accounting software.
